What's on your build table?

*Note: You can click on any photo to enlarge.

Zuriel is at it again.

Zuriel has been sending me build photos of what he is building. He has taking a stack of wood and is putting together a Primary Force. I hope he spells Force correct this time. On the last one he spelled it Phorce. Any way here are a few photos of his progress.

My Tutor II - Reloaded

I took the winter break to recover my ARF Tutor II. The monokote was getting fuel soaked and coming lose. I stripped it, fixed a few cracks in the LE sheeting and filled in a few little low spots. It is recovered, now just add the hardware, engine, wheels and tank. I hope I did not change the way it flew.

Gray Hayes - Nice Yak

Gray Hayes sent me some photos of his Yak. Below is his email and some photos. I hope to see him fly it at our Spring Fling.
============================================================================================================

Hi Paul,   Best wishes for "Happy Landings" all through this new year. Thanks for keeping me in the loop on all the information, I really do appreciate it.   Just thought I'd share some photos of the Sterling Yak-9 I built from an original kit. Yes, I did substitute some wood using the original for patterns. As anyone who built the original Sterling kits knows most of the wood was very heavy. Hey, the Yak-9 was Russian and built for combat, so heavy was ok then. This one is the third one I built and I did make a few mods. First was an extra balsa doubler on the nose. Second, I moved the landing gear into the wings. Third, added small ailerons to the wings. The inboard one is stationary and the outboard one is adjustable. Fourth, adjustable rudder, leadout guide, and a tip weight box. You can hardly tellin the photos but the exhausts are painted on. The model is finished in Moneycote on the wings and their paint on the rest.   Happy landings,   Grey Hays

Bellanca Viking by Jim Treace

I got an email from Jim last night. He is build this cool looking scale model. Her is a snip-it from his email along with photos. Nice looking Plane Jim!
Email:
Hey Paul, It has to be cold in Memphis, because it is quite cold here. Down to 30 tonight, but gets to 60 daytime. Anyway, been working on my Bellanca Viking. Jim Young design. I had Tom Niebuhr cut the ribs. Power is RO-JETT .51. WS 55". Hope for a finished weight in the mid 50oz range.  I owned and flew a full size Bellanca Viking and paint scheme of this model will be the same as my original. Here are a few of the latest building photos. Still have a lot of detailing to do (that means sanding!!!). Merry Christmas to you and family. Jim

Zuriel is at it again...

Zuriel is out of his mind. Or he is working on his new plane again.. It is called, Out of My Mind.  Here are some photos of his handy work.

New Tutor II for Tyler

Thanks to Arlan someone has a new ride. I rebuilt Arlan's Tutor II for Tyler. Now we just have to get him on the handle.

Zuriel's new plane.... Out of My Mind.

Zuriel is in the shop again. This time he is out of his mind! Well that is the name of his new plane. It is his own design. He is a very good builder. Here is a email he sent me along with some photos.

I hope I have these in order.  I have a shot of the engine/tank compartment.  Then the rough cut block and shape.  Next I placed it over the engine compartment.  I then put some 1/4" basswood pieces across the bay, they are only temporarily in place.  I then cut an oversize piece of 1/8 ply and place over the basswood.  I mark and drill these two pieces together and install blind nuts to the tank compartment side and washers to the cowl side.  Next I will glue the 1/8 ply to the cowl while it is screwed in place.  Once dry, I can drill the holes through the cowl and line the hole with aluminum.  Permanent!  I can now shape the cowl and it will perfectly match the plane.  I will send more pictures as I get further along.

Tutor for Tyler Barthel.

Arlan had a mishap with his Tutor II and donated it to Eric Barthel. Eric is going to get his son flying control line. Eric has a busy schedule so I volunteered to do the repairs. It should be ready in a few weeks.
And here is a few after photos. All I need to do is add the hardware. I will paint the nose because I can not get monokote to stick to it. This should be a good flyer. Thanks Arlan for donating the plane, and Thanks Zuriel for donating some parts. I know this would make this big kid happy to get a good flying plane like the Tutor II.

Gray Hayes and his P-51

I stopped by the hobby shop today to pick up a few odds and ends and visit with Gray. He built this little 1/2a for a customer. It is powered with a OK Cub and check out the flaps.

And yet another update from Zuriel.....

I got an email from Zuriel with more photos and how to's. His plan is to have this plan sitting on wheels next week. Get-R-Dunn Zuriel We leave for Brodaks in less then 50 days!

=============================================================================================================
Paul,

Picture one shows the first, middel and last ribs set in place.  The leading and trailing edges are made from 3 pieces with a 1/16th center "shelf" for the ribs to sit on.

Picture two shows the many stripped ribs.  These are the ribs for one side.  I have another pile for the other side.

Picture three shows the jig I made for cutting the ribs.  Pretty simple and very effective.

Later,

In Lou's Shop...

I called Lou to ask for a little help with my Akrobat. I needed to glue my wing and stab in and wanted to make sure I got it right. He invited me over and said that a few more folks were coming to run some engines so we would just make a afternoon of it and he would even feed us lunch. Well I could not pass that up. Zuriel and Mike came over from across the river. And Jim Lynch came and his pilot friend Vic stopped by. Lou taught me a thing or three about getting everything lined up. ( I have to get me one of those fuse jigs!)
Zuriel has a very cool Randy Smith engine with a carbon fiber pipe. It sounded way cool. Jim helped him get the props repitched and got the pipe cut to spec, once a call was made to Randy Smith Tech Support. And my Akrobat now has the wing and stab mounted. Just have to do a few more odds and ends. Add  fillets, setup the controls, finish covering on the fuse, glue on the rudder and fin, install the flaps, and elev, landing gear, add the cockpit, and canopy and I am sure I missed a few things. we sure enjoyed the day. Great food, Great friends add up to a great time. Thanks Lou for letting us take over your shop. (And the home made jerky and banjo playing was good too!)

More pictures from Zuriel.... Update.

I got another email from Zuriel. He is been busy as a beaver, and has cut as much wood as a wood chuck!

=======================================================================================================
Paul,

I hope you can see in the pictures that I had to glue in pieces to hold the belcrank assembly in place.  Once the wing is joined and the top cap installed, it will be bullet proof.  I also included shot of the Vampire wing completed.  Needs a fuse now!

The lst one is the fuselage for the piped plane.  Somethings seems to be missing....I can't put my finger on it though!!!

Zuriel

The latest from Zuriel

Zuriel has been a busy little beaver. He went over to Louis's and they both are doing a fun little plane call a Shark. I got this update from Zuriel. Pictures below
==============================================================================================================
The vampire is coming along nicely.  I have decided to use mostly Elmers glue and don't regret the decision one little bit.  The wing is straight and very light.  The kit is one I cut out at Lou's.  I took one side of the laser cut fuselage of Walter Umland's kit Lou has and modified it as shown.  The rest is hand cut.  I love this hobby.

Zuriel

Update on my Akrobat

All I have to do is cover the fuse. I am going to ask Lou to help me cover the fuse and then glue the wing in. It is ready to come together.

Another update from Jim.....

I got an email from Jim. He is not snowed in but real close.
Jim's email:
===============================================================================================================
Paul, Can't fish offshore. Winds, rain, 10 foot seas and it is cold. Not the kind of weather to be in a boat. It's been bad all winter. So, had to do something, so I started working on another plane. This is my second build of a profile Roadrunner kit from Blue Skys Models; Tom Neibuhr makes a nice kit.  The profile Roadrunner specs: Wing 54", 630sq", fuselage 37 1/2". Engine recommended .40 to .46. My first one really performs, but I built it a bit heavy and want to keep this one lighter. I used the wing jig from Jim Snelson at CL Central Hobbies. Really made the wing building process a snap. I modified the wing, added 1" to the inboard panel to make both panels the same (wing now 55"). This required both flaps, which were full span, to be equal lengths. I decided to shortened both flaps to 20" (about 3" shorter), making them equal. Will have to see what this does to performance, but I believe that it will be OK.  I set motor mounts for both my 1970's K&B .40 and a LA .46 (just incase I need more power). For finish, I plan on all dope and silkspan. I intend on using Higgins fadeproof dye in the dope for as much of the color as possible to hold down on weight.  I'll send pictures when completed. That's about it from Florida.     James T. Treace

Update from Jim Treace on his P-51

I got an email from Jim on his winter project. Well I am not sure they get winter in Florida. Check out that cool exhaust stack!!!

==============================================================================================================
Hey Paul,
A few pictures of my completed (still need to add decals), P51. I sent one picture earlier to you of build under construction. This is final color.  I wimmped out and didn't do the more complicated paint scheme that I wrote about on the SH Forum. May do that scheme when I build a full fuselage version. I just wanted to get this one done and fly, but gosh, the weather did not help us. My flying field is under a foot of snow!

Back in FL now. It's warmer here! Jim

Zuriel's Building Table.

I am a little late in updating the site. Zuriel Armstrong sent me an email on January 20th. Here is his email with what he has going on in his shop.
==============================================================================================================
Email:

Paul,

Good talking with you today.  I have the Cavalier closest to complete.  It is glued together as shown.  It needed the vertical stab shaped and the wheelpants installed permanently.  I also need to reshape the top of the nose block so it isn't straight.

The Chizler shows the cutouts for installing the wing in the fuse.  Unfortunately, these were done after the fact.

I hope you like the pictures.

Zuriel

My Akrobat build.

Below are some photos of my Akrobat build. It is coming along. I redid the cowl. I just need to glass it and sand a little more. I am working on the wing. It needed some patching in a few spots. I will change out the bellcrank and put in heaver lead out wire. I also removed a large slug of lead weight in put in a tip weight box. I am learning a lot with this project.

Jim Treace P-51D

Picture
I got an email from Jim Treace. Jim has been busy in his shop.

Note from Jim "Scratch built P-51 D from Pat Johnson autocad plans. 52 1/2" wing span, 565 sq".  I did have Pat cut the ribs. Power Fox .46 BB. Still need to do some sanding, glue wing,stab, elev and flaps. Cover and finish will be silkspan and dope, but haven't decided on color scheme...yet.  Should be ready to go at our next Spring Fun Fly."

What is on Paul's hockey table?

Picture
I got this Akrobat from a local estate by way of Kelly Wilson. It was already built, I just need to nail it together. I plan to power it with a LA .46. It needs a little TLC and missing a few small parts. Check Stunthangar.com for more updates as it comes together.

Zuriel's in the shop....

Zuriel sent me some photos of his latest projects. He has three planes he is working on.
He is building a Sultan and has started the engine cruch. This will be a pipe plane with a PA .40 size engine. The last picture is what it will kind of look like when it is complete. I am sure Zuriel will put his style of colors on it.

The almost completed bones is a Cavalier, and the maroon winged bird is a Chizler.
I can not wait to see them fly this spring.

Here is an update from Jim Treace

Picture
Finally got my Black Spitfire (Brodak kit), completed and eight flights at my filed. OS. LA 46 with RSM 12 x 5.5 on 60’ .015” lines seems to be OK. Still need some trimming as I may have too much flap control. CG is perfect

Picture
My most recent completed model is a Galloping Comedian (kit from Walter Ulmand

All dope (Sig and Brodak) and silk covering. Power is Fox 35.  First few test flights have been very good.
